Dining Room Rug - Take 2

First off, wanted to thank you all for the warm response to my guest post over on B and B yesterday.
Very kind indeed.

So today, I am going to send you into the weekend with my dilemma.
Maybe you can help sort it out.

I am BACK to the rug issue for the Dining Room (here was the first discussion.)  Only this time...it's fo' real.  I'm ready to pull the trigger.  The drapes are here (although not up yet) and the next step is the rug.  I get such anxiety over this.  What is wrong with me?

Now kids, for the record.  All of these options are very different, and yet I really do love them all.  I think that is one of the reasons I am having such a difficult time making a choice.  That, and I'm like a deer in headlights when it comes to my own place.  Anyone else's place?...yeah, I'm like a killer lion.  Seek and destroy!  My place?...I'm like Bambi....Maaaammmmaaaa!

That made NO sense.  Sorry.

Moving on...

THE OPTIONS

So, let's just get this out of the way.  This furry, impractical, glorious white rug has been a looooong standing favorite of mine.  Against the pleading and dare I say, judgment of others, it still is. It just adds that softness, along with the texture that I want.  Plus, it's against the rules...and you know I love that!

This one is a different take on the fur, but toned down a bit.  It also, feels a little Beni Ourin to me, but with a fresh twist.

I have always, always, always loved pink/lavender with a rich navy blue.  The fact that it's a Persian doesn't hurt anything either!  It would add muted color, and softness.  BUT, it's a wee bit on the small side (6x9.)

Now before everyone frantically starts screaming, "CHOOSE THE LEOPARD PRINT!!!," let's just chat in a rational manner about it.  This last option is a real struggle for me. I looooove animal print.  Like, really love!  BUT, I want this room to feel soft...or, at least semi-soft.   I'm not wanting to go punch you in the face, hardcore design bitch, ala Kelly Wearstler here (not that she literally goes around punching people in the face, but you know what I'm saying.)  Plus, there are SO MANY animal prints to chose from, and everyone and their dog is using it, which I have to say is probably truly my main issue.)

So there you have the 4 rug options (right now.) BUT...

... as if the rug dilemma weren't enough... there is another LARGE piece of the puzzle that you are not even aware of yet.

What is this mystery element you may ask?  The table top.
I will be making a custom table top in one of these four finishes (depending upon which rug is chosen) .  Heaven help me.

Hehehe.  Are you still with me?
Nope, me neither and I'm supposed to be driving this crazy train.

So here's how it's supposed to break down.  I think.

Malachite - White rug or maybe Leopard.
Gold - yup, Liberace strikes again. White rug, Beni or Persian.
High Gloss White -   Any but the White rug.
Reclaimed Wood - White rug or Beni or maybe Leopard.

Good grief.  I think that's enough for now.  I need a strong drink and a friggin' nap.

I'm afraid to ask for fear it will just push me over the edge
 but, thoughts anyone?

Beni, it's the white but not..........and its not there to make a huuuuge statement.......and it will suit most of your table top options......and it's a great pattern base with a freshness that compliments your room.......and it's my fave.

I'm new around here so I'm sorry if you've already mentioned this, but this is a formal dining room, right? Like eat in it at Thanksgiving and Easter and otherwise just walk past and admire the prettiness? In that case, I'd go with the white, since it sounds like that's what you really want and it's only the potential impracticality holding you back. Otherwise, I really like both the Beni and the Leopard, but I would pass on the Persian; too small rugs drive me insane.

It is always easy to pick design elements for a client but we are stuck on our own mess. TOO MANY OPTIONS. The little voice in our head screams insults at every choice. It you are trying to soften the DR I would go with the destressed wood tabletop and fluffy white rug. (I was really voting for the white rug with the glass top you are going to replace.) Good Luck!2

My first choice is the Persian (can you get 2 of them & put them together?) with the reclaimed wood top. I like the idea of the rough wood with your table base.

My second choice is the white rug with the reclaimed wood. Do you use the dining room that much? Most people don't. Just don't invite messy people over. Like my husband.

Just make sure whatever you get is large enough. A pet peave of mine is a dining are with a rug that's too small.
But I'm sure you know that. You're a great designer.

All of those are gorgeous choices!! I love the white but as the owner of two white rugs, let me tell you, they can go from pretty to disgusting after just one dinner party or sick dog. I also love the leopard but I feel the same way about it, it's like a whole commitment. I did velvet leopard chairs so if I get tired of them I can switch em out. I think that Persian gives it some girliness and softness and also brings in some great colors to work off of. Good luck, I'm sure whatever you choose will be darling!

Go with the one you really, really want (the white one!!) because if you don't, you won't be satisfied.

Malachite table top. Definitely.

I love the top 3 rugs. I'm not into the gold or malachite table tops in your dining room, I think they need to be in rooms where they are the star, and your room already has so much going on (in a good way). I really love the wood table tops, it's just hard to picture with the gold table legs. But you are the designer!

All the picks are fabulous! I think I'd be tempted towards the lavender rug (with a natural sisal underneath if it's too small) and wither a lacquered white (or black) or herringbone wood table top.

Practical reasons - don't choose the white rug -- it is going to be a bear trying to scoot your chair in and out from the table. Second, you are going to deal with alot of shoes on that rug (unless your guests come barefoot) :) The leopard while bold seems a bit forced into the space and with so many other great elements, you may be heading into "Crazy cat lady" territory. The pink rug would be my choice but since it is small and unless you want to layer two rugs (which seems like double the cost) then I would skip it. So that leaves the Beni rug which is a beautiful soft grey with a hint of fur - I think it is the winner......

I love the lavender rug, but I'm kind of loving the idea of the white fluffy rug with the malachite table top! The lavender with the gold would be fab too though....I don't blame you for having a hard time choosing! Whatever you choose will be fabulous :) xo

Hello from San Diego. The white rug is the softest, prettiest, least "hard" and least "typical" option...and it sounds like the one you really want. I'd tell my guests they have to remove their shoes to truly experience the dining room...yum!! And to be honest, dining rooms are usually enjoyed as a visual feast, with an occasional dip into their lusciousness. White fur!!

Hi!! I would just go for it! Choose the fluffy white rug, it feels so good specially now in the cold season. As for the tabletop - golden or malachite, depending how classic or not you want to go decorating this room. Greatings from Germany!

Whoa! That is tough! Now as much as I love leopard, if you're not going for a KW effect I would steer clear as you already have some pretty ornate pieces in the room and, all combined, it could start gettin busy...in a very good way, but not what you're looking for you say. I think sticking with first instincts is good and that sounds like the white fluffy rug (plus I do love that one to bits as well). The table top I would go wood or malachite (because holy mother I just want to see this happen!). Good luck with your decision! Can't wait to see what you decide and how fabby it looks!

xx
