Painting Vintage Lamp Shades DIY

So I got these lamps for a client, and once they were in my hot little hands, I noticed the shades were a little more "vintage" than I was hoping for.  It's hard to tell from the pic below but, they were that sickly, aged yellow color, and although not terribly noticeable had a couple of stains on them.

I didn't want to buy new shades for budget reasons, the fact that these were still in great condition other than the afore mentioned afflictions, and they were made for the lamps and therefore fit perfectly.  So, I made the decision to bite the bullet and paint the suckers.

It was super easy to take them from this...

TO THIS...

I adore the outcome, and am very happy I took the paint plunge.  Here's the process.

First, I just used some craft paint thinned with a little paint conditioner although, I'm sure fabric paint would work well too.  Here one is after the first coat.

It took me three coats to get full coverage.  I kept the strokes going vertically to mimic a strie look.  It really helped keep them from appearing obviously "painted."  Instead they took on a bit of a raw silk quality.

Part of my concern in painting the shades was that I would lose that fantastic hand painted garland that was such a special part of the original feel of the lamps.   But, then I thought, "ehhh, what the hell, I can always just add that back on after they are painted."

And so I did.

Now mind you, my hand-painted garlands are quite a bit more heavy-handed than the originals, but, it still makes such a fantastic, and special detail for these lovely vintage lamps.

I hope my client is as happy with them as I am.  The closer we get to install day, the more excited I am to see it all together and finished.

So pretty! Are you able to see brush marks when the light is on? I've painted the inside of a shade before, but you can see it's paint when the lamp is on. :/ Hoping you have the trick! :)

Damn! Hand painted? You make that sound so easy. I seriously can't draw a straight line.

very well done! I have similar vintage drum shades that are in desperate need of an overhaul...only the shades are lacquered already.....gonna have to bite the fullet and redo these entirely.

Whoa, you hand painted the garland? I was like, how'd she paint around those. They look identical. Good job.
