I am writing this blog tonight in honor of my husband's cousin Gary. He was more like a brother to Jason, and boy were they were two of a kind. Two massive men (6'5, 6'6 respectively) that are nothing more than ornery, big teddy bears. Gary was only 50. It was sudden, unexpected, and far too soon. Like my husband, he was a die hard Oklahoma Sooner fan. Obnoxiously so in fact. Get them together for a game, and something was bound to get broken. It was serious stuff and they meant business!
They were so much alike it was almost comical. We joke that Jason is Gary's blond clone. Both highly intelligent, both bald, both mouthy with a mean wit, both charming, and both crazy big. Gary was the editor of the newspaper in the town where he lived. He was always curious, and always asking questions. He wanted to know every side of everything. A scholar of life, if you will. A true intellectual, despite his humble upbringing in rural (you have NO idea) Oklahoma. In the time I've known Gary, he has made the kind of impression upon me that few have the qualities, and ability to make. He was loving, giving, hilarious, humble, intellectually provocative and most of all, gracious and welcoming. It's hard to think of a world without him. It will be a much duller place. He filled a room completely, not just because of his size, but because of his "presence." There was so much kindness in his eyes. He was not perfect...but, he was perfect enough. He will be missed. Greatly. I can only hope he and Deb are having one heck of a party up there! Here's to you Gary. We will love and miss you always. BOOMER! SOONER!!!
